Grey Reef North Platte River Fly Fishing |
Welcome to the Lower North Platte River at Grey Reef Dam, a tailwater fishery known for huge trout, and light fishing pressure.
A Wyoming fly fishing float trip starts right here on the Grey Reef section of the North Platte River. This tailwater is home to wild rainbow, cutthroat, and brown trout. Due to warmer winter water release the Grey Reef section of the North Platte River stays open even in the dead of winter and offers great fly fishing year round. Flows at Grey Reef Dam range from 500cfs in the spring/fall to 3500cfs in the summer months. Stable flows at Grey Reef produce an environment rich in aquatic life. Scuds, midges and worms maintain these huge trout throughout the winter months. Hatches begin with spring baetis and continue into the summer months including yellow stone flies, pale morning duns, crane flies, tricos, and caddis. Due to their rich environment these trout are extremely healthy and incredibly hard fighting. Most of the trout caught at Grey Reef are in the 18-20 inch range with lots of girth! It is no understatement when people say that this is by far the best big rainbow trout fishery in the country! Click here for fishing report and river conditions.
